Closed Species: Dendrofels by Aria-Suna-Kunoichi
(Species adopted from :iconmeg4lovania:. ^^)

~GENERAL INFO~

-Dendrofels are a species wildcat that exhibits some traits of the Poison Dart frog. They cannot go more than a day in an area with dry air, which is why they prefer humid areas. They have spines along their back that inject a poison upon stabbing, but that is not their sole purpose. They split in the middle, lacking spine there, and it is instead replaced with a membrane of moisture-absorbing skin-like substance. They help Dendros absorb moisture from the air. They have the ability to lay the spines down against their back.
-These membranes are also located in the 'splits' in each ear. Dendrofels actually have FOUR ears, but two on each side blend together to form two ears with two tips each. Their tails split at the ends, and within is a fin. They can spread this fin out and pull the two tips together to open and close it. They also have spines along the backs of their front legs, but they do not split with a membrane. However, when they are extended they reveal two sharp fins. The spines here also inject poison. Dendrofels use the fins on their tails and arms to help them swim.
-Unlike a normal cat, Dendros do not perform a more catlike version of the doggy paddle. Instead they actually swim more like human beings, but with a tail. They use the fin on their strong tail to propel them through the water like a dolphin.
-When in water, they really just ignore their hind paws. They use their front paws like paddles in a way- pushing one to the side, then the other, repeating over and over. When they want to turn they take the fin on the opposite side of the direction they're swimming and push very hard to that side, propelling them in the other direction.
-Dendrofels can stay still in water- they just use their large tailfin to keep them afloat, much like a kangaroo standing on their tail. They can swim underwater as well, and for a very extended period of time.
-Because they don't need to eat much, they have small stomachs, which allows much of their body to be filled with a pair of (in proportionary terms) HUGE lungs. They can hold their breath for a long time as a result.
-There are two pieces of skin that fold over their noses when they go underwater to prevent water getting into their lungs. The little flaps of skin also aid in moisture soaking, like the fins and ear/spine membranes. A lot like alligators or crocodiles, they have a clear, extra 'eyelid' that folds across their eyes when they go underwater to aid in clear vision and to keep eyes from getting injured.
When first born, Dendros have normal fur, but as they age it begins to shed water like a duck's feathers. Dendros spend all of their time not spent eating, drinking or sleeping in water.
-They love to swim. They sometimes play little water games, similar to Marco Polo or water tag. These games are joined by adult Dendros, but are most enjoyed by the younger ones.
-Baby Dendrofels are called kittens, or 'tadkits.' (Tadpole/kittens.) They are raised until they can take care of themselves within their small 'societies.'

~ODDITIES~

Albinism: Albino Dendrofels are obviously pure white, with pink/red or blue eyes. Sometimes the usually black spines become grey. Their fin/membranes are always black. Most Dendros are attracted to bright colors, so you'd think this would prohibit them from finding a mate, but that isn't the case. Instead Dendrofels notice the bright white fur- white is all the colors. Albino is actually very attractive to them.

Black Dendrofels: Dendros are VERY rarely born black. 80% of the time, they are born without membranes, which means they won't survive. However, sometimes they are born with their fins and membranes, though they are weaker than normal, and have a MUCH higher chance of survival.

Lack of spines: Sometimes a Dendro is born without spines. They can survive, but they are usually weaker, have more limited defenses, and their arm fins are much weaker when they swim.

Long fur: Very rarely, a Dendrofel has long fur. They can easily survive like this, but it prohibits them from their normal swimming habits. This is the type of Dendrofel usually found in captivity. They need human's help, because they don't know how to take care of long fur.

A Dendro can also be born with any other cat deformity.

~RELATION WITH HUMANS~

Humans see Dendrofels as beautiful creatures- almost as friendly as dogs and very reluctant to use their spines. Though expensive, they are highly sought after as pets, and as mentioned before, long fur is preferred. They are also cross-bred with normal cats to create Dendrocats, a smaller version with shorter spines and fins.

Dendrocats sometimes happen in the wild as well, and it's a much more common way of getting long fur in a tribe. If a female Dendrofel ends up having Dendrocat kittens, a lot of the time no-one catches on, but suspicion can lead to someone figuring them out. The tadkits are often made fun of if someone figures it out.

~OTHER STUFF~

-Several tribes sometimes live in one area.

-The Dendrofels believe in a myth of their creation, which I can write out if anyone takes interest in them. ;3
-Dendros originate in South America, mostly in the Amazon Jungle, but humans who have taken them into captivity have spread them to every humid climate in the world. They can also live in captivity within a not-humid climate if supplied with a humidifier and (in summer) a baby pool.
